Mercedes Sosa died this weekend, of kidney failure. In case you didn’t know, Mercedes was part of the Nueva Cancion movement in Latin America (folky type music from the Southern Cone - Argentina, Uruguay, Chile). Victor Jarra, who appeared on my Ten Deadly Blows to American Music list was also part of this movement.

If you have an espescially sharp ear and have been keeping up on recent movies, you will recognize this song, “Balderrama,” from the Che biopic that Benicio del Toro made.
